The end of the year is fast approaching! I am so happy to be back at work and absolutely thrilled to have a healthy baby boy to come home to. Our class was hard at work before my leave and while I was away. We worked very hard to complete our Klamath history book, starring Keno the Dog. The kids completed the book just in time and we sent it away to be printed in hardback. We hope to get our books just as the school year is ending. I am so proud of the all effort that went into our book from our parent volunteers, guest speakers, teachers, and above all, the students!However, a Klamath history book certainly isn’t the only project my ambitious class decided to take on. We are currently putting the final touches on our Oregon Trail play that we have been working on since February. The students created all of the scenery for the play and have been hard at work memorizing their lines. We look forward to presenting our play to family and friends on May 22nd at 4:00. Our Oregon Trail play is part of our Oregon Trail unit, which each student is writing a book for. In our Oregon Trail books, each student was given the identity of a pioneer girl or boy. The students travel the Oregon Trail, stopping at famous landmarks, and enduring sometimes challenging fates along the way.

Since we have spent so much time in class learning about Klamath history and the Oregon Trail, we decided it was time for a trip! Our class visited the Lava Beds for their annual “Timeline Living History Event.” We learned about the Modoc People, the Oregon and Applegate Trails, fur trappers and mountain men, and the Modoc War. We had a great time watching reenactments of events/people that we have been studying.

Though we are looking forward to a relaxing summer, we still have a lot of work to do. We hope you enjoy the pictures of our projects and hope to see you on May 22nd!

During career week, we learned about different jobs in our local community.

Kelly Kritzer introduced various roles in a courtroom.

Then we role played through a mock trial.

Michelle Durant, an archeologist, described her job.

We searched for “artifacts” and marked them with flags.

As we enter this last grading period of the year, we have a lot of important assignments to finish up. Many of these will make up your formal work samples for a number of subjects for the year, so we’ll spend a good deal of time refining them.
Volcano Research Essays 6th & 7th grades:

Rough drafts due Monday May 13. Final drafts due Friday the 17th.

Volcano models are due Monday May 20. These will be mainly built at home and brought in on the 20th. On May 22 we’ll be exhibiting the models (and watching them erupt!) at our annual Spring BBQ.

Our speeches on these volcanoes will be given during the week of the 13th. We’ll start Monday and will finish by Friday at the latest (I don’t expect it to take that long, though).

8th grade:

Native American Culture

Harold Wright, a Klamath-Modoc Native American, has been teaching us Klamath language and culture.

Learning about local tribal culture is fun.

We enjoyed listening to the local folk tale.

We sang the counting song in Klamath language.

Harold taught us common Klamath questions and phrases.

This week we finished the CAD program, worked with circuit boards, looked at careers, and took a tour of the F-15 maintenance hanger.

On our 3rd day at STARBASE we built a space module with CAD, did a solubility experiment, performed fluid investigations, and discovered Bernoulli’s Principle.

Here we have some beautiful shots of Sage 6th & 7th graders being Super Smart at Starbase!

We used computer simulations to model pressure and velocity of fluids.

We used chromatography to separate components of various inks.

And we experimented with the solubility of a variety of fluids.

Tomorrow we’ll continue our Literary Criticism unit with another installment of the King Arthur legends!
