Career Week—May 6 to May 10

Monday May 13th, 2013

During career week, we learned about different jobs in our local community.

Kelly Kritzer introduced various roles in a courtroom.

 

Then we role played through a mock trial.

 

Michelle Durant, an archeologist, described her job.

We searched for “artifacts” and marked them with flags.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Native American Culture

Friday May 3rd, 2013

Harold Wright, a Klamath-Modoc Native American, has been teaching us Klamath language and culture.

We enjoyed listening to the local folk tale.

We sang the counting song in Klamath language.

 

Harold taught us common Klamath questions and phrases.

 

Creative Writing with Cam, Writer in Residence

Wednesday April 17th, 2013

     It is National Poetry Month and we are thrilled that Cam revisited us.

As a writer and fly fishing guide, Cam showed us what he usually carries in his backpack, which include two journals, a computer, and fly fishing gear, etc.

With his enthusiasm and humor, Cam engaged everybody in learning the use of alliteration in poems.

After individual practices, it was time for collaborative writing.We all enjoyed creating alliterative story together.

Literature Month

Friday March 1st, 2013

 

Kenneth Mcgee, a local author, shared his life stories in his books Mud Watching and Beyond Surprise.

Ken showed us the notebooks that collect ideas for his writing.

He also presented us the clothing from Afghanistan.

We read books to kindergarteners and first graders on Dr. Seuss Day.

 

 

We created story books…

 

…then we read our stories to students from other classes on National Read Across America Day.

Other classes also shared their writing projects with us.

Fish Eggs to Fry

Monday February 25th, 2013

 

Mr. Moser, a volunteer from Klamath County Flycasters, introduced different types of trout in our area.

 

We were excited to see the trout eggs.

…and the life cycle of trout.

Time to release the trout to the fish hatchery.

 

We recorded our learning in the science journals.

Staying Healthy

Friday February 1st, 2013

Laurie Wayne, field educator of Grow Healthy Kids and Communities, taught us the importance of staying healthy and proper steps to wash our hands.

 

 

Mr. Bac taught us how to fight bacteria.

 

Henry the Hand told us more about germs.

We practiced the proper way to wash our hands.

We learned not to touch the T-zone with our hands.

Good job for answering the questions correctly!

 

Under ultra-violet light, we were able to see how thorough we washed our hands.

Laurie was thrilled to receive the posters that we made for her.

Native American Culture

Ms. Michelle Durant, a local archaeologist, introduced different Native American cultures to our class.

We could not wait to share our rock art creations.

We enjoyed listening to rock art stories.

During social studies, we read about first communities in North America.

Winter Holiday Celebration

Friday December 14th, 2012

 

 

During science lessons, we learned about climate and seasons.

We had fun making paper snowman and composing winter poems.

We read different versions of the story Gingerbread Man.

Then, we made gingerbread man story books.

We also wrote about winter holidays.

After we learned about how different cultures celebrate winter holidays, we created our winter holiday stories.

We had fun making winter holiday art projects. When we made Christmas trees, we learned about geometrical solids.

When we made paper snowflakes and trees, we learned the concept of symmetry.

Here are some of our shape poems for the winter holiday.

Learning how to sew and making winter hats were fun!

We enjoyed sharing our memory books and decorating cookies during the Winter Open House.

Geography Week

Tuesday December 4th, 2012

 

During social science, we learned about map and globe skills.

We applied map skills when we learned about our nation.

We learned about continents and oceans as we studied the world map.

We love reading riddles about map and geography.

We had fun learning about where different items were made and locating the countries on the maps and globe.

We enjoyed learning about global  interconnectivity with Chris Wayne, a local geographer. He also taught us using the scale to measure distances between countries.
