Text Box: The entire school visited a local creek that is in the beginning stages of restoration. Shannon Peterson, a KBRT biologist, introduced us to the project , showed us frogs that are being held in a temporary home and to which she feeds crickets daily . She told us why the huge equipment digging holes and moving dirt was necessary to re-channel the creek to a more natural path. We drew pictures of all the wonderful things we saw out there, and set up photo Text Box: points so that when we revisit the Creek in the spring and in years to come we can monitor the progress . ~ We also visited the headwaters of this creek, Mare’s Egg Spring, a treasure that is home to a rare Nostoc algae colony locally known as Mare’s Eggs .

Thank you to Mr. vonSchlegell , property owner , who arranged for the school to visit the site and take a hands on approach to learning Text Box: Crane Creek

We have been exploring the alphabet. In particular letters “M” and “A”. The children have brought home a retelling stage and stick puppets for the story of Goldilicks. There have been many special ‘show and tells’...several to involve the use of our map... Washington DC and a boomerang from Australia. We enjoyed our trip to Crane Creek. We will make a journal of the creek as we continue to note its progress. Thank you for the opportunity to experience your children in Ms Jennifer’s absence. They are truly a delightful group. I will be thrilled to come and spend time with your children for special activities.—Ms Kay

So far, Ms. Lori’s class has enjoyed 2 picnics by Agency Creek. We’ve learned how springs are formed at the base of mountains and we’re even reading a novel about a special spring in Tuck Everlasting. In class, we are writing Cinquain poems about Crane Creek, reading great books and learning how the ancient Egyptian counting system is a lot like our base—10 number system!

We are working hard on reading, both classes have been studying story structure. In math, we have been learning about bugs, sorting and patterns. The first grade is beginning to create their own story problems, and the second grade is working with money and growing patterns. We really enjoyed our trip to Crane Creek. We drew pictures of the site and took rubbings of objects we found in our journals. Thank you to all out parent volunteer. We really appreciate their help! - Ms Bridget

We are finding azimuths with compasses for maps we drew of the Sage campus. After visiting Mare’s Egg Spring, we are writing short stories, illustrating them and presenting them to the class with the option of using props .
