2007-2008 Student Application Procedure
Sage Community School is a tuition free public charter school, available as an educational option within the Klamath County School District. Our mission is to create a safe, collaborative and academically rigorous environment for grades K-8* in the greater Chiloquin area. With a place-based learning model focusing on area natural resources, agriculture and Klamath Tribal culture, curricula will integrate core instruction with project-based instruction on a foundation of experiential learning and character education. Each student will work toward his or her highest potential and meet or surpass the state benchmarks. Success will be evidenced by a high quality portfolio of place-based projects exemplifying his or her understanding of that relationship to family, community, country and the world.
*Grades K-6 will be offered in Year2007-2008. Grades 7-8 will be added in subsequent years.
Eligible Students. Any child who resides within the Klamath County School District boundaries is eligible to attend. Sage Community School is allowed by law to admit out-of-district students after all KCSD students who have applied at the time of the lottery have been placed.
Admissions Process. For the 2007-2008 school year, the admissions process will begin March 5. Student application for enrollment cards will be available at informational meetings (March 5 & 10), the lobby of the Chiloquin Community Center as well as by contacting the phone numbers listed above. To be eligible for the first round of admissions, application for enrollment cards must be received at the address above no later than Thursday, April 19, 2007 at 5:00pm.
Lottery. The school enrollment cap is 65 students, a target of 9 students per grade level. If by April 19th, more students apply than there are spaces available at each grade level, state law requires that an equitable lottery be held to determine admission. The lottery will take place April 19th at 6:30 pm. Application for enrollment cards will be selected at random to fill the available slots in each grade. This random selection will ensure fairness without regard to ethnicity, national origin, disability, gender, income level, English proficiency, or any other student characteristic. Students who reside outside of the Klamath County School District will be placed on the list after all in-district residents have been assigned a spot in the lottery.
Second Enrollment Period and Waiting List. Applications for enrollment will continue to be accepted after April 19th. The deadline for the second round is June 7th. If necessary a lottery will also be held that day. All applications exceeding open spaces will be kept on a waiting list in order received. Thereafter, Sage Community School will admit students on a space available basis at any time during the school year.
Official Enrollment. Applications do not serve as official registration. Families will be notified of their acceptance status by April 23rd. SCS will mail official registration forms to parents. Parents must notify SCS of their student’s intention of attending for the 2007-2008 school year by returning the registration packet no later than May 7th, for their space to be assured.
Official Documentation and Records. Registration packets including health cards and academic records request, etc…will be available the week before school opens. Parents will be reminded to pick these packets up and turn them into the SCS school office before or on the first day of school.
